You will PERSUADE the audience to accept your position on a topic AND to take specific action in support of your position regarding a philanthropic or social justice cause, organization, or event. This is a “call to action” speech in which you will engage your audience in joining you in taking action to support your cause. Your topic may be local, regional, national, or international. This is considered “advocacy;” that means you will “advocate” for support of a philanthropic or social justice organization or cause through a particular action. You will convince the audience to agree with your position and to adopt a certain behavior or take particular action in support of your philanthropic or social justice organization or cause. Philanthropic relates to a person or organization that is seeking to promote the welfare of others, especially by donating time and money in support of the cause. Synonyms for philanthropic are charity, humanitarian, and altruistic. How to pronounce philanthropic in American English: British English pronunciation: philanthropic (https://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/pronunciation/english/philanthropic) Social justice relates to fair administration of laws and distribution of equity in a societal setting. Synonyms for social justice are fairness, equitable, egalitarian, and human rights. You MUST research your topic and present at least three verifiable and academically acceptable sources. Read all instructions below as well as review the instructions in our eCampus “Recording Your Speech” tab if you plan to submit your speech online. Note: Choose a topic that you feel passionately about and can personally advocate your position. This must be a topic about which you have personal knowledge and experience. This not simply a persuasive speech about a controversial issue; you must focus supporting an organization, cause, or event that has a philanthropic or social justice nature. Warning: Certain topics are not acceptable (primarily because there are too many speeches available about these topics online and your work must be original). Please find other topics than: abortion/choice, the Affordable Care Act/Obama Care, marriage equality/gay marriage, legalization of marijuana, and the death penalty. If you simply MUST speak on one of these topics, you must give your instructor a compelling reason to accept the topic; otherwise, find a more original topic that keenly interests you. You will have to present your research in advance of your speech for authenticity (not plagiarized). See our libguide at https://libguides.richlandcollege.edu/KentPersuasive/topics. Here are some good websites to help you find an appropriate topic. Only one student may address each topic, so choose your topic early in order to get your first choice.
