When evaluating essential qualities of leadership, it is hard to imagine a more important element than character. For the Godly leader, character is everything – it is a reflection of God’s prominence or absence in the leader’s life. When thinking of leaders of character, many examples come to mind. Perhaps one of the most effective examples is that of Daniel. As we have already read and discussed regarding the account of Abraham, God often tests and develops character through times of intense trials. In the case of Daniel, we see a Godly leader whose character was revealed during a time when most others would have simply yielded. Following up on our devotional from unit two, we are also reminded of the importance of prayer through Daniel’s experiences. Please read Daniel 1-2, as well as the accompanying study note Character: Daniel had what it took! in the Maxwell Leadership Bible (p. 1048). In developing your response to this devotional discussion, please evaluate the impact of character in revealing God’s presence in the life of a leader. Please address the following points in your response: How is character revealed in the leader’s life? Is this expressed differently in the life of a Christian leader versus a secular leader? How does character inhibit or limit leadership effectiveness? Relate any experiences you might offer in identifying how God has tested or developed your character as a leader.
