This week I’d like you consider the role of figurative language in writing.

Welcome to the Week 4 discussion board! This week I’d like you consider the role of figurative language in writing. 1. Choose a poem from this week’s assigned readings and discuss the role that simile, metaphor, and/or personification play in the poem. What is your favorite use of figurative language in the poem? 2. Describe a physical space that you know well. It could be your kitchen, the interior of a car, a local park, a porch, the street where you grew up, a particular beach, a campsite, your office, or the gym. The possibilities are endless. The key is to choose a place that is meaningful to you in some way. For this exercise, you are required to use at least one simile, one metaphor, and one instance of personification. If you feel stuck, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Have fun and be creative! Reads: 1. “Souls on Ice” by Mark Doty 2. “Nothing Gold Can Stay” by Robert Frost, “Harlem” by Langston Hughes, and “From Blossoms” by Li-Young Lee 3. Watch Jane Hirshfield’s “The Art of Metaphor.”
