The Future Operating Environment Scenario paper is your conceptualization of the future operating environment. The future operating environment is your analysis of and forecast for the world in 15-30 years. Your conceptualization of the future is based on your analysis of the long- and short-term trends in four focus areas: technology, the international system, governance, and conflict. Required Format • Title Page: The title page must include the title (i.e., A U.S. National Security White Paper), name, course name and number, and professor’s name. • Introduction: This section provides an overview of the topic that you are writing about, a concise synopsis of the issues, a problem statement, and your thesis. A reader should know your analysis, argument, and proposals from your introduction. This section should be 1 page. • Scenario: This section provides the results of your research on and analysis of a possible, plausible, and probable future. In a quantitative project, this section would provide the results of the data collection and an analysis of what it illustrates in empirical terms. In a qualitative paper, it will produce the findings that you have made from an empirical analysis of your variables. This section should also provide the evidence, presented logically, that provides a persuasive argument for your thesis. This section is an incorporation and refinement of your Future Operating Environment Scenario. This section should be 3-5 pages. • Conclusion: This section provides a concise summary of the future national security challenges and problems the United States must address in your scenario. This section should be 1 page. Learning Objectives • Assess the key influences on the international and national security environments in the near- and long-term future. • Analyze the extant and predicted threats to the international and national security environments. • Deconstruct the existing and predicted strategies to address the near- and long-term threats to the international and national security environments. • Synthesize the strategic, policy, and doctrinal necessities for future war and conflict. Technical Requirements • Your paper must be at a minimum of 5-7 pages (the Title and Reference pages do not count towards the minimum limit). • Scholarly and credible references should be used. A good rule of thumb is at least 2 scholarly sources per page of content. • Type in Times New Roman, 12 point and double space. • Students will follow the current Turabian Style as the sole citation and reference style used in written work submitted as part of coursework. • Points will be deducted for the use of Wikipedia or encyclopedic type sources. It is highly advised to utilize books, peer-reviewed journals, articles, archived documents, etc. • All submissions will be graded using the assignment rubric. |
