In Glossip v. Gross (2015) the US Supreme Court ruled that lethal injection using Midazolam was constitutional and therefore states could continue to execute death row inmates utilizing the three drug regiment. In this past week, as the reading assignment points out, the Federal government, the Bureau of Prisons executed three death row inmates using a one drug regiment, Pentobarbital. From the reporting after the executions, there did not appear to be any information as to the suffering of these inmates. Though the number of US citizens supporting the use of the death penalty has declined in the last twenty years (it’s now at approximately 54% from a high of 76%) and the number of states no longer rely on it’s usage- the death penalty is still a viable punishment in this country at the state and federal levels. After reviewing the videos linked to this Discussion Board posting, answer the following: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFBOs8bsa2Q https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Ap7dccrk3U 1) Do we still use the death penalty to satisfy our need for revenge? 2) Is it possible for society to give up the death penalty? Give a relative example! 3) With the recent use and apparent “success” of using Pentobarbital, will this encourage more states to rely on this drug to carry out the punishment of death and can we anticipate seeing an increase in executions as the second video eludes to?
