In Chapter 14 of the text, it reviews the threats and challenges to the IC in the 21st Century. Ironically, the chapter starts off with the issue of pandemics, but to the later part of the chapter, the issue of transnational terrorism is introduced. Though there is a focus on ISIS an Al Qaeda (international), the chapter also addresses domestic terrorism. As has been discussed in class, domestic terrorism relates to a particular country- but the white supremacy and Islamophobia is also transnational in nature. As the chapter has pointed out- the internet has been a valuable tool as towards the radicalization of citizens. Among the vehicles for radicalization of domestic terrorists in the US are web based blogs 4Chan and 8Chan. The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) has been at the fore front of identifying the extent of hate in the US ( https://www.splcenter.org/fighting-hate (Links to an external site.)). In reviewing the chapter and utilizing the the SPLC and the attached article- what can the IC do to counter hate in the US without infringing on Constitutional protected rights? https://www.nytimes.com/2019/11/10/us/politics/domestic-terrorism-justice-department.html (Links to an external site.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5fWauWGspU (Links to an external site.) https://reason.com/video/the-3-rules-of-hate-speech/ 2. As the chapter points out, the IC has numerous threats to address rather than just the Cold War threats the country faced after World War II and up until the fall of the Soviet Union. If you were the Director of National Intelligence (DNI), based on the threats identified in the etext, which would you qualify as the three most significant threats to the US and why? In addition, as DNI how do you suggest the IC meet these threats with the various “INT’S” available to the IC? |
