| Instructions for Exercise 3.1: Gender Roles One of the functions of the family is to teach family members appropriate gender roles (Benokraitis, 2015). For this week’s exercise, ask THREE individuals four questions from the list below and summarize their key points in your writeup. Keep all of their responses confidential and separate. Compare-and-contrast your personal perspective with their views. Define each of the terms using your etext chapter 5. 1. Describe the Demographics of Your Sample (3 Participants) 2. Select 4 Questions: 1. What are the parental gender role expectations for males and females in your household and/or culture? Provide several examples. 2. What is considered traditional versus nontraditional gender roles? How have these roles changed across the generations? 3. According to your gender ideology, should the man or woman be the boss in the family? Explain. 4. What are the gender scripts for a couple who just moved into an apartment or home together? 5. If you had a choice, would you rather be employed or stay at home and take care of the household and family? 6. Is the birth of a girl or boy valued more in your family? Explain. 7. Should children’s toys be gender-specific or gender-neutral? Explain. 8. Who provides a majority of the household instrumental roles (tasks, provision, protection, procreation)? Who provides most of the household expressive roles (emotional support, nurturing, warmth, sympathy)? Provide several examples. 9. Is there historical and current gender stratification in your household or culture? Explain. Exercise Short-Essay Format: This short answer must be at least 750 words or 3-4 pages in length (not including cover and reference page) and must be double-spaced, 12-point font, and submitted on a Microsoft Word document through Turnitin.
