RESPOND TO THE ESSAY BELOW Demonstrate your proficiency in critical thinking by showing the weakness(es) in their strong and weak arguments. ESSAY: Black Lives Matter is a movement that has been created to skew and misalign the equality of our country by pushing a narrative that African-Americans and people of color within the US are universally treated as less than those who are not. There have been numerous cases of police officers and public officials making poor choices and being corrupt and yet the media and this movement have chosen only to focus on the ones that have happened against African-Americans. In addition, we are currently living in a world right now that is plagued with a disease that is highly-transmittable and also in an economy that has taken a serious hit as a result. Leaving your house to go protest and riot is both furthering the spread of COVID-19 and also hurting the local economies of towns that are rioted and looted. Black Lives Matter is a movement that has arose almost out of necessity, a universal message and response that people can have to retort against the systemic racism and bigotry that has plagued its country since its inception. The message is not intended to be saying people of other ethnicities or colors don’t matter, but that black lives matter equally to the lives of others, and that it seems that many in the police force and the government have seemed to forget or choose to neglect this fact consistently. While I think both arguments make interesting points, I think that the argument in favor of Black Lives Matter is the argument that is filled with the most truth and the one that is stronger. I think that the poison of racism is very deeply ingrained into our country, and in combination that with much of the history that we are taught in school as kids leaving out how deeply injustice African-Americans have been treated since the start of our country, many people have been desensitized to racism so much so that they only notice it when it is an extreme example. I think having a movement like this is very important so that people can learn both the history of injustice and wrongdoing against others that has occurred as well as what they can do to get involved now, change the system, and try and create a better future for the next generation. |
